Are You Building Using the Technologies of the Past or the Future?

GRAMMATICAS CONSULTING LTD
Briefing Note
By Dominic Grammaticas FCA
August 2026

Safari tourism has always required ingenuity in construction. Building in remote locations, off-grid, in sensitive environments, with limited access to materials and skilled labour. The sector has a long history of making things work in difficult conditions. But the question is whether the solutions being used today are keeping pace with what is now available.

Modular construction is transforming how staff housing, back-of-house facilities, and even guest accommodation can be delivered. Faster build times. Lower transport costs. Consistent quality. Minimal site disruption. A modular unit can be manufactured off-site, transported flat-packed, and assembled in days rather than months. For operators in remote locations, the savings in time, logistics, and environmental impact are significant.

Waste management is another area where innovation is overtaking convention. New compact septic and treatment systems are now available that are more space-efficient, more effective, and more environmentally responsible than the traditional solutions most operators still rely on. In a sector that operates in some of the most ecologically sensitive landscapes on earth, how you manage waste is not just an operational detail. It is a statement about your values.

The same applies to water harvesting, solar and battery technology, grey water recycling, and building materials sourced from sustainable or regenerative supply chains. The options have expanded dramatically in recent years. The cost has come down. The performance has gone up. And yet many operators are still defaulting to the methods and suppliers they have used for a decade or more, simply because they are familiar.

This is not about chasing novelty. It is about asking whether the way you build and maintain your infrastructure is aligned with the sustainability commitments you make to your guests, your investors, and the communities you operate alongside.

Grammaticas Consulting Ltd works with operators on property development and infrastructure projects across East Africa. If you are planning a new build, a refurbishment, or simply want to explore what modern building technologies could do for your operation, I would welcome the conversation.

“I Got Some Training on Company Culture a Year or Two Ago”

GRAMMATICAS CONSULTING LTD Briefing Note By Dominic Grammaticas FCA October 2026 I hear this more often than you might expect. A CEO who attended a workshop, read a book, brought in a facilitator for a team-building day, and then moved on. Box ticked. Culture sorted. Back to business. Except culture is the business. It is...

Yes! Of Course I Know What the Strategy Is!

GRAMMATICAS CONSULTING LTD Briefing Note By Dominic Grammaticas FCA September 2026 Every CEO says this. Most believe it. But here are three questions that test whether that confidence is justified. First: is your strategy genuinely coherent? A modern conservation-led tourism business has to balance commercial performance with environmental stewardship, community benefit, and guest experience. These...

Who Is Your Neighbour?

GRAMMATICAS CONSULTING LTD Briefing Note By Dominic Grammaticas FCA September 2026 It is a simple question. But the answer says a lot about how connected you really are to the environment in which you operate. Do you know the name of your local chief? The chairman of your conservancy? Your sector warden? The KWS officer...
